Émile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) - Lot 128
Émile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) The cellist on the column or Music Bronze with light brown patina Signed " BOURDELLE " on the base Bears the founder's mark " ALEXIS RUDIER FONDEUR PARIS ". H. 30 cm This Cellist on a Column brings together two inspirations dear to Emile Antoine Bourdelle: music and ancient art. The sculptor tackled the first theme in a series of bas-reliefs for the façade of the Champs Élysées theater in 1912. Among the allegories addressed, a plaster study entitled La musique features a cellist (Mon- tauban, Musée Ingres, inv. MI.54.8.1). Then, between 1914 and 1916, Bourdelle produced two series of watercolors dedicated to Orpheus playing the lyre and Winged Centaur playing the lyre.
