Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) Head of the Young Girl of Bou-Saâda Bust in gilt bronze and pewter Signed " E. Barrias". Bears the mark of the founder " Susse fres Edrs Paris " and the mention " COPYRIGHT BY SUSSE FRES ". Bears the inscription "Offered by / Gustave Germain / to his dear wife / Louise in memory / of the 30th anniversary / of their Marriage / 12bre 1869-1891 ". H. 36,5 cm Inspired by Achille Guillaumet's painting Cardeuses de laine à Bou-Saâda (1885, oil on canvas, Rouen, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. 1888.2), the Jeune fille de Bou-Saâda (Young Girl of Bou-Saâda) was designed to adorn the tomb of the Orientalist painter in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris. In 1890, Louis-Ernest Barrias presented a wax version at the Salon, and then a plaster version at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Related literature: Stéphane Richemond, Les Orienta- listes.
