Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) Presumed self-portrait of Bartholdi, 1890 Bronze medallion Signed and dated " Bartholdi / 1890 " under the ear Diam. 40 cm A document identifying the portraiture and indicating the founder Thiébaut Frères Paris is attached Although trained as a painter in Ary Scheffer's studio, Auguste Bartholdi devoted himself to sculpture with Jean-François Soitoux. In 1854, he met with his first success when he won the competition for the monument to General Rapp launched by the city of Colmar, where he was born. During the Second Empire and the Third Republic, he was often asked to create monumental sculptures as part of important urban projects. He was mainly responsible for The Lion of Belfort and the Statue of Liberty.
