Box of circular form on short heel in bronze and polychrome - Lot 239
Box of circular form on short heel in bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamels on a turquoise blue background, decorated with lotus flowers in their foliage. A four-character Qianlong mark in kaishu (Qianlong nian zhi), followed by the character dong. Some missing enamel. China, Qing dynasty, reign of Qianlong (1736-1795). A rare set of Qianlong period objects presents ''classical'' Qianlong marks with four or six characters in kaishu, but followed by a single character, as here dong. This character is taken from the Qian Zi Wen, a classic of Chinese poetic literature, which includes, as its name indicates, one thousand characters. The use of one of these thousand characters to number objects is well known. It can also be used to indicate the location of an object in a palace, or to guarantee fraud against theft or copying. 昆池碣石,鉅野洞庭 (kun chi jie shi, ju ye dong ting) D. 8 cm, H. 5 cm
