ELEMENT OF CHAR in bronze of curved form, with decoration of cicadas, stylized qilong and leiwen; a mobile bell. Missing, strong patina of excavation, crystallizations of malachite and azurite. China, Shang dynasty (ca. 1550-1050 B.C.). H. 24 cm This type of element was used to hang the reins of the horses on the chariot, in order to leave the hands free to the driver. Such elements were found in the tomb of Queen Fu Hao of the Shang.
