Marie LAURENCIN (1883-1956) - Lot 131
Marie LAURENCIN (1883-1956) Elegant women and rider in a landscape Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom center. Label on the back n°159 /MLaurencin /Landscape. 55 x 38 cm PROVENANCE: former collection of Jean-Pierre Besnard; private collection. BIBLIOGRAPHY: D. Marchesseau, Marie Laurencin, Catalogue de l'œuvre peint, Paris, 1986, n° 209 (illustrated in black and white). Our painting is part of a series of works with Le Jeu de volants en forêt de Sénart, (Marchesseau 210), Les Amazones, 1922 (Marchesseau 216), Quatre femmes dans les bois, 1922 (Marchesseau 221). A forest, declined in nuanced greens, envelops characters with elegant silhouettes, as if coming from a dream. Marie Laurencin was inspired by her excursions to the area around Sénart: in 1925, she bought a country house in Champrosay on the edge of this forest. These years also correspond to the beginning of the painter's notoriety in the Parisian world. In 1923, Marie Laurencin was commissioned by Diaghilev to decorate the ballet Les Biches for his Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo (music by Poulenc, choreography by Nijinsky). This set design, now preserved in the Musée de l'Orangerie, also bears witness to the sylvan and magical atmosphere that is the hallmark of Marie Laurencin's poetic art.
