Auguste Jacques REGNIER (1787-1860) - Lot 118
Auguste Jacques REGNIER (1787-1860) View of the cemetery of the church of Royat Oil on canvas. Stamp of the gallery of H.R.H. Madame la Duchesse de Berry on the back of the canvas. Inscription Régnier. 48 x 65 cm PROVENANCE: collection of the Duchess of Berry. EXHIBITION: Paris Salon, 1822. This work was part of the collection of the Duchess of Berry, whose collection stamp can be found on the back of the canvas. Chevalier Feréol Bonnemaison, curator of the Duchess's collections, wrote a glowing commentary on this painting in the work published in 1822 on the Duchess's painting collections (Volume I). It states that this work was presented in 1822 at the Salon and purchased by the Société des Amis des Arts. Bonnemaison states about this work that "the color and the touch of this painting are equally remarkable, the one by its vigor, the other by its frankness and its firmness. [...] The painting of M.Régnier offers I don't know what melancholic charm which stops the thought and produces on the spirit a sharp impression". This painting was lithographed by Féréol Bonnemaison.
