Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Medallion of Albert Camus, 1961 Workshop plaster with traces of shellac Not signed Inscription (on the edge, in relief) : ALBERT CAMUS 1913 1960 D. 45 cm Inv. MD-S-031G-00h Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent Poor general condition Marcel Damboise and Albert Camus met in 1934 in Algiers, during an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, exhibited there as a resident; Camus, aged 21, went there as an art critic for a newspaper. The friendship between Damboise and Camus continued until the writer's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus' death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, made of stone, still adorns a monument in honor of Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne, the commune where his sudden death occurred.
