Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) - Lot 232
Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Portrait of Albert Camus, 1961 Lacquered gum plaster on a stone base Not signed 43,5 x 20 x 25 cm Inv. MD-S-032-00b Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent. Marcel Damboise made this portrait of the writer after his death in a car accident in 1960. In the years 1932-1935, Albert Camus, a student in his twenties, was interested in the work of Damboise, who was a resident at the Villa Abd el-Tif in Algiers. Camus published inspired reviews of the sculptor's work, the two men met and a strong friendship was born between them. They share a knowledge and taste for ancient Greece. After Camus' death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, made of stone, still adorns a monument in honor of Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne, the town where his sudden death occurred. As far as we know, the bust exists in terracotta, plaster and bronze. A bronze copy is in the library of the Théâtre national de l'Odéon (FNAC, Inv.9467). It is an Émile Godard cast, numbered 0/8, signed Damboise 1962, and bought from the artist in 1964.
