Workshop of François GIRARDON (1628-1715), attributed to Ren - Lot 198
Workshop of François GIRARDON (1628-1715), attributed to René CHARPENTIER (1680-1723) The deploration of Christ Around 1705. Oak panel carved in relief. 96,5 x 73 cm RELATED LITERATURE: Alexandre Maral, François Girardon le sculpteur de Louis XIV, Arthéna, 2015, pp.345-351 This deploration of Christ is directly inspired by the last large composition conceived by François Girardon for the family funerary monument in the church of Saint-Landry (now preserved in the church of Sainte-Marguerite, Paris 11e). A first contract was concluded with Eustache Nourrisson and Robert Le Lorrain in 1703 in which the two sculptors indicated that they would work on a marble after a model provided by Girardon. The figure of Christ was first given to Nourrisson, but he died in 1706 without having completed it. The figure was finalized around 1707 by another artist, Massou, Le Lorrain or more probably by René Charpentier. A testimony of Pierre-Jean Mariette indicates in speaking about this collaborator: "I had him say that M. Girardon had him work on his models for the tomb that the famous sculptor erected in the church of Saint-Landry". Author of the preparatory drawings for the engravings of the famous Recueil de la Galerie de Girardon, it is this collaborator of Girardon in 1705 who probably executed this bas-relief with a very pictorial composition.
