Jean-François DEMAY (1798-1850) Market and festival in a provincial town Oil on canvas. 60 x 81 cm Jean-François Demay was a self-taught painter, a follower of Demarne, he frequented Turpin de Crissé in particular. His work is distinguished by the brilliance with which he treats scenes of fairs and markets, villages animated by large crowds, fairs and landscapes that he sent to the Salon from 1827 to 1846. His works are detailed, faithful and poetic documents of peasant life at the time of the Restoration.
