SCULPTURE Abelam area, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea - Lot 25
SCULPTURE Abelam area, Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea Medium-hard wood, ochre, white and black pigments. H. 73.5 cm Representation of a male figure, probably nGwaalndu, the face with fine features surrounded by a motif evoking a mandorla. The arms are folded in a symmetrical movement of the hips, both in high relief. Between the vertical feet, a head in the round. A rich polychrome decoration adorns the whole figure, a pectoral, in particular, described above the chest in short volumes. The smooth back of the figure makes it possible to consider its use as an applique, intended to decorate an architecture. Cf. Ombres de Nouvelle Guinée - Arts de la grande île d'Océanie dans les collections Barbier-Mueller, Somogy éditions d'art Musée Barbier-Mueller, Paris Genève, 2006, page 85, cat. 27, for a related example
