Appel.les Fenosa (1899-1988) - Lot 141
Appel.les Fenosa (1899-1988) Talking woman, 1952 Bronze proof, n°II /5. Lost-wax casting by Susse. Founder's signature (on the edge of the base) " Susse Fondeur Paris ". Signed and numbered " Fenosa II/5 ". 106 x 45,7 x 45,7 cm Provenance: Sala Gaspar Gallery, Barcelona; Private collection, Japan The Talking Woman is one of the rare models by Fenosa made in large size. Its original plaster is kept at the Ap- pel-les Fenosa Foundation in Spain, and two bronzes are located in addition to the one presented here: one in private hands, the other in the Rambouillet Museum. The Talking Woman is part of Fenosa's approach to the vegetalization of the human form, which he pursued until the 1960s, as well as his research into figuration, influenced by the work of Giacometti. A sculptor of Catalan origin, trained by the sculptor Casanovas, Appel.les Fenosa lived in Paris between 1921 and 1929, before settling permanently in France in 1939. He began his career in direct carving, which he gradually abandoned for modeling. During his first stay in France, he became close to the Spanish artists of the School of Paris, befriended Picasso, and the writers Cocteau, Éluard, Michaux, whose busts he would later create. To the surrealist poetry that marked the beginning of his production, was added around 1950 the search for unity between nature and the creative gesture of man.
