Chana Orloff (1888-1968) - Lot 131
Chana Orloff (1888-1968) Head of the Madonna, 1937 Bronze proof, without numbering. Sand cast by Alexis Rudier. Signed and dated (right): "Ch. Orloff 1937". Stamp of the founder (on the back) : " Alexis Rudier fondeur Paris ". 39 x 18 x 21 cm A certificate of Mrs Ariane Tamir, the artist's successor, will be delivered to the buyer. Provenance: Paris, private collection. The Madonna's Head, listed under number 216 in the catalog of Chana Orloff's sculptural work, exists in plaster, wood and bronze. The Chana Orloff studio, which has been open to the public for a few months, has the plaster of the Madonna's Head. The wooden bust was shown in private exhibitions of the artist at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York in 1947, and at the Katia Granoff Gallery in Paris in 1963. The work can be seen in a photograph from the Chana Orloff exhibition hosted by the Tel Aviv Museum in 1949. Finally, our bronze print, cast during the artist's lifetime by one of the most important founders of the time, Alexis Rudier, is most likely unique.
