Dora Gordine (1895-1991) Hindu head Model created around 1930-1933 Bronze with black patina shaded with blue Signed "Dora Gordine" and numbered "3/8" behind the right shoulder Bears the founder's stamp "C. VALSUA- NI CIRE PERDUE" on the back of the neck H. 34 cm and base H. 8 cm The model of this bust of a young Hindu was made during a trip to Singapore, during which Dora Gordine applied herself to the art of portraiture. Originally from Latvia, she trained in Paris where she met Aristide Maillol, then moved to London. During her career, she exhibited regularly at the Exhibition of the Society of Fine Arts, the Salon des Tuileries and the Royal Academy. Between 1930 and 1935, Dora Gordine travels in Southeast Asia. It was during her stay in Singapore, in February 1931, that the municipal commissioners commissioned six heads, both ethnic and expressionist, to decorate the new buildings in the city.
