Michael Tombros (1889-1974) Reclining woman Bronze with brown patina Signed and dated " M TOMBROS / 1930 ". Bears the founder's stamp " BATARDY / CIRE PERDUE / BRUXELLES ". H. 15 cm, marble base H. 2 cm Michael Tombros was introduced to sculpture by his father and then by Georgios Vroutos at the School of Arts in Athens, where he was born. In 1914, he obtained a scholarship and studied in Paris with Henri Bouchard and Paul Lan- dowski at the Académie Julian. Back in Athens in 1919, he became an eminent professor and contributed to Greek sculpture in the 20th century. The Batardy foundry was active in Brussels between 1925 and 1945 under the direction of Herman and Léon Batardy who took over the business created by their father. The foundry specializes in the casting of statuettes by the lost wax method. We also owe them a certain number of public monuments in Belgium.
