Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) - Lot 62
Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) Standing bather Model created in 1900 Bronze proof with a shaded brown patina, sand casting Published by Ambroise Vollard from 1902 Signed "Aristide Maillol" on the right of the terrace H. 63 cm A certificate of authenticity from Olivier Lorquin, member of the Compagnie nationale des experts affiliated to the European Confederation of Art Experts, dated June 30, 2017, will be given to the buyer In his Portrait of Ambroise Vollard (oil on canvas, ca. 1924, 96.5 x 111 cm, Paris, Petit Palais) Pierre Bonnard chose to depict the art dealer and collector seated to the left of his fireplace adorned with a bronze statuette depicting a standing female nude with her left arm behind her back. The master's painting highlights one of the very first sculptures produced around 1900 that marked the beginning of Maillol's career as a sculptor. It also pays tribute to the essential role of Vollard in the distribution of this work, one of the artist's most emblematic. This Standing Bathing Girl shows both the artist's taste for figuration and his very personal, refined and serene style, which was to make him a success. The original model executed in wood was created around 1897-1900 and was quickly acquired by Princess Bibesco. This bather could be the one that Vollard quotes in his Souvenirs d'un marchand de tableaux, initiating the bronze edition of Maillol's first sculpted works: "I had said to Maillol, who had just given the last chisel to a wooden statuette: 'If we made a bronze of it? -A bronze? Give me the statuette, I'll take care of it". The subject (model no. 3 in the painting presenting the Catalogue of Maillol's sculptures published by Ambroise Vollard drawn up by Ursel Berger) was one of the twenty-two works whose ownership and publishing rights were transferred to Ambroise Vollard in 1902. It was then made in terracotta and cast in bronze, in several versions with variations, notably the drapery and the terrace, and different dimensions (H.64, 66 and 75 cm). Our example is similar to the first version, which was first cast in bronze by the foundry Bingen & Costenoble. Our bronze copy was published by Vollard, during Maillol's lifetime, according to a contract drawn up in 1902 between the artist and the art dealer. As was still the practice at the beginning of the 20th century, this contract did not establish any limitation on the number of copies.
