Victor Peter (1840-1914) The Lion and the Rat Patinated plaster Signed "Vtor PETER Bears the inscription " ON A SOUVENT BESOIN D'UN PLUS PETIT QUE SOI ". H. 33 x W. 60 x D. 30 cm This charming plaster is a tribute to the fable The Lion and the Rat by Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) published in the collection Fables in 1668. A student of Devaulx and Falguière, Victor Peter participated in the Salon from 1873 onwards, and was responsible for statues decorating the Hôtel de Ville de Paris and the Grand Palais. Towards the end of his career, he collaborated with Rodin.
