Jean-Antoine Injalbert (1845-1933) - Lot 39
Jean-Antoine Injalbert (1845-1933) Love Taming the Force Bronze with brown patina Signed " A. Injalbert". Bears the stamp " THIEBAUT FRERES FONDEURS PARIS ". Bears the dates " JANUARY 1854 / JULY 1894 H. 45 x W. 49 x D. 25 cm In 1880, Injalbert presented drawings and models of these two monumental groups that still adorn the promenade of the Peyrou garden in Montpellier. These two stone sculptures, L'Amour domptant la Force and La Force domptée par l'Amour, were begun in 1883 and inaugurated on April 6, 1884. Our impressive bronze reduction, remarkably cast by Thiébaut, is the group on the left as you walk up the Montpellier garden walk; it represents the moment when Love is still struggling with Force. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Béziers holds a preparatory wax sketch (inv. 0483 (3983)).
