Feuchère 1833", H. 34.5 cm, Paris, Musée de la Vie romantique, inv. 2011.7. Drawing from biblical, Faustian, Dantean or Miltonian iconography, Romantic artists in the 19th century favored cursed figures, and first and foremost that of Satan. Feuchère was perfectly in line with this artistic trend when he showed this 'Satan' and the pair of vases that accompany it at the 1834 Salon. The figure of the fallen angel is inspired by Dürer's 'Melancholy', of which Feuchère had a proof. "With his elbow on his knee, his chin in his hand, [dreaming] of the poor human fate, Feuchère's Satan adopts the pose of the romantic poet, which Carpeaux and Rodin later used for Ugolin and The Thinker.
