Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) - Lot 25
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887) Rembrandt and Albrecht Dürer Pair of bronze statuettes with light brown patina 1- Rembrandt: signed " A. CARRIER " and bears the circular stamp of the founder Colin, titled " REMBRANDT " on the drawing board,H. 43 cm 2- Dürer: signed " A. CARRIER", and bears the circular stamp of the founder Colin and titled on a collection of engravings Albrecht / Durer, H. 40,5 cm Upon his return from England in 1855, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse produced numerous works representing historical personalities in the historicist spirit, notably artists and musicians, in the form of terracotta busts or bronze statuettes. Among the personalities, he paired the famous Flemish painter Rembrandt with the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, under both typologies. Due to the success of these models, Theodore Deck even produced earthenware pieces that were presented at the Central Union exhibition of 1863. An edition of the two artists shown seated was ordered from the Colin company. This attitude is reminiscent of his Jean de la Fontaine after Pierre Julien (1731-1804), inspired by the Series of Great Men, commissioned in 1776 to the greatest sculptors of the eighteenth century to commemorate national glories (preserved in the Louvre).
