FRENCH SCHOOL of the second half of the 19th century after the antique Diana of Gabies Bronze with light brown patina. H. 39 cm Molded and blackened wooden base H. 3.5 cm RELEVANT WORK: Italy, Diana of Gabies, marble, H. 174 W. 52 D. 48 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. Ma 529. The ancient marble was discovered in 1792 on the property of Prince Borghese in Gabies, near Rome. Acquired by Napoleon in 1807, the work was sent to France and exhibited in the Louvre in 1820. The Diana of Gabies, whose beauty was praised by the critics, was a real success. The model was widely distributed throughout the 19th century, thanks in particular to the assistance of the publisher Barbedienne.
