FRENCH school of the last third of the 19th century after PRAXITELE Hermes carrying a child Dionysus White marble bust. Dusting. H. 48,5 cm White marble pedestal. Somogy ed. 2007, p. 33, p. 120-123 The ancient marble was discovered in 1877 during German excavations in the temple of Hera on the site of Olympia. The identification of the incomplete group attributed to the famous Greek sculptor Praxiteles was made possible by the traveler Pausanias who wrote in the 2nd century AD: "Some time later, a marble Hermes carrying Dionysus as a child, the work of Praxiteles, was consecrated at the Heraion.
