Pierre-Jules MÈNE (1810-1879) Horse at the gate n°1 (Djinn) Model created in 1846. Bronze with brown patina. Cast by the Atelier Mène between 1846 and 1879. Signed and dated PJ Mène 1846 on the terrace and titled Djinn. H. 29,5 L. 38 l. 14,5 cm RELATED LITERATURE: Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Pierre-Jules Mêne, catalog raisonné, Paris, Univers du Bronze, 2007, model listed under n° CHE 1, pp. 58-59. Rejected at the 1847 Salon, the Cheval à la barrière was finally presented at the 1849 Salon under the title Djinn, étalon arabe. As soon as it was presented at the Salon, the model met with great success and was published until the middle of the 20th century. Nevertheless, the most beautiful proofs are made in the second half of the 19th century and are titled and dated like our copy.
