Bears an inscription on the back of the mount Pomona and Vertumne / see this flexible vine / married to this young abalone / the tree stretching away etc. / Demoustier / Letters to Emilie on mythology. 27 x 39 cm PROVENANCE: Anonymous sale, Paris, Tajan, June 26, 2008, no. 48, reproduced. Anonymous sale, London, Bonhams, October 30, 2013, no. 73, reproduced. The small text on the back of the mount refers to the writer Alexandre Charles Demoustier (1760-1801), famous for his Letters to Emilie on Mythology, whose model was his friend, the painter Marie-Guillemine Benoist.
