However, their tradition is attested to as early as the end of the 17th century. And their major role within the Fante regalia. Displayed during annual festivities or funerals, they are the object of parades and are hung around the community shrine called Posuban. Their ornamental themes exacerbate the opulence and power of rival societies, and the motifs also illustrate proverbial formulas of great importance in Akan culture and tradition.
