ASAFO FANTE FLAG, Ghana - Lot 249
ASAFO FANTE FLAG, Ghana Cotton. l. 132 L. 87.5 cm Asafo on a red background decorated with an applied narrative: a dignitary seated on a traditional seat, receiving three other characters. On an upper corner, the Union Jack. The exact origin of the Fante or asafo community flags remains a mystery. However, their tradition is attested to as early as the end of the 17th century. And their major role within the Fante regalia. Displayed during annual festivities or funerals, they are the object of parades and are hung around the community shrine called Posuban. Their ornamental themes exacerbate the opulence and power of rival societies, and the motifs also illustrate proverbial formulas of great importance in Akan culture and tradition.
