ASAFO FANTE FLAG, Ghana - Lot 248
ASAFO FANTE FLAG, Ghana Cotton. l. 149 L. 92 cm Applied on an orange background, a formula like a slogan "Come and Try", surrounded by the representation of a dignitary on a traditional seat and a character inveigled by the latter. On one of the upper corners is the Union Jack. The exact origin of the Fante or Asafo community flags remains a mystery. However, their tradition is attested as early as the end of the 17th century. And their major role within the Fante regalia. Displayed during annual festivities or funerals, they are the object of parades and are hung around the community shrine called Posuban. Their ornamental themes exacerbate the opulence and power of rival societies, and the motifs also illustrate proverbial formulas of great importance in Akan culture and tradition.
