OUMELE BAOULE SEAT, Ivory Coast - Lot 190
OUMELE BAOULE SEAT, Ivory Coast Wood with a crusty patina, accidents. H. 22,5 L. 41 cm Stool forming a block, the seat curved, a grip inscribed laterally. A beautiful face characteristic of the style is depicted in medium relief in the center of one of the sides. This type of seat was reserved for one person. When the owner died, the seat was sometimes used as a receptacle for the cult of the ancestors (In Sièges d'Afrique Noire du musée Barbier-Mueller, p. 114), thus becoming an oumien bia, or ancestor seat. The patina, crusty here, linked to the cults, makes it possible to consider it. It should be noted that models with a figure, as here, are rarer.
