ASIPIM ASANTE CHAIR, south-central Ghana - Lot 188
ASIPIM ASANTE CHAIR, south-central Ghana Wood, leather, iron, copper alloy, accident. H. 75,5 L. 39 cm The shape of this chair is inherited from European furniture, particularly Iberian, which reached the south-central region of Ghana in the 17th century. The literature describes it as a small local throne, whose rich ornamentation is a sign of prestige. The term asipim would mean "I stand upright", an allusion to the stability of the state or the chieftaincy (In Sièges d'Afrique Noire of the Barbier-Mueller Museum, p. 132). Beautiful example of the type with rich ornamentation.
