CORNEILLE, Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010) - Lot 142
CORNEILLE, Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010) Mounira, 1999 Bronze with brown patina. Signed and dated Corneille 99, numbered EA I/IV on the right hip. H. 8 L. 20 cm A student at the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts, he was one of the initiators of the Cobra movement. After the dislocation of this group in 1921, Corneille returned to figurative art in an expressionist register. Although sculpture is not his best-known mode of expression, he nevertheless works in bronze and ceramics from 1954 onwards and in polychrome wood in the 1990s. In 2001, a major retrospective exhibition was devoted to him by the publisher L'Estampe, covering his work from the Cobra years to 2000. In 2020, in Pont-Aven, another exhibition is dedicated to him under the title Corneille, un cobra dans le sillage de Gauguin.
