FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1860-1880, entourage of Albert-Ernest CA - Lot 26
FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1860-1880, entourage of Albert-Ernest CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1824-1887) Priape and Bacchante White marble group. H.51 cm Restoration to the right wrist. In the 19th century, and particularly under the Second Empire, society developed a strong taste for Dionysian subjects imbued with sensuality and voluptuousness. With his marble group The Bacchante, presented at the 1863 Salon (Paris, Musée d'Orsay, inv. RF 143), Carrier-Belleuse responded particularly well to these expectations. Our work is largely inspired by this highly successful work by Carrier-Belleuse.
