Henri Frédéric ISELIN (1825-1905) Bust of a Young Roman Bust in white marble. Signed H.F ISELIN. under the left shoulder. H. approx. 48 cm PROVENANCE : Paris, André Lemaire Gallery; then private collection. RELATED WORK: Henri Frédéric Iselin, Buste de jeune romain, marble, H. 48 W. 35 D. 21 cm, inscription in hollow on the right on the base ISELIN 1851, deposit of the Musée d'Orsay (inv. ML 142), Musée de Lons le Saunier Inv. D 2003.1.1 RELATED LITERATURE : Christiane Dotal, " Coup d'œil sur l'œuvre du sculpteur portraitiste Henri Frédéric Iselin ", in Revue Haute-Saône Salsa, n°40, October-December 2000 ; Eugène Lami, Dictionnaire des sculpteurs de l'école française du XIXe siècle, tome III, p. 185 ; A student of Rude, Henri-Frédéric Iselin, who made his debut at the 1849 Salon, was considered by the critics to be a quality portraitist. Indeed, his portraits were praised for their "realism of form and ideality of expression" (Émile Cantrel, "Salon de 1863", in La Revue l'artiste, 1863, t.1, p.185), for which he received numerous awards. The artist executed many official busts, such as that of President Boileau or of Napoleon III and the Duke of Morny. In 1851 he executed the bust of a young beardless man, entitled Buste de jeune romain presented at the Salon, acquired by the State and which earned him a third class medal the following year. At the 1855 Universal Exhibition, he exhibited this work with another head of "well-characterised" expression for which he received a third class medal. The archives of the Musée d'Orsay hold a photo from the 1990s of our bust, which is currently considered to be the only known repeat of this model.
