Wedding in the Country, ca. 1860 - Lot 287
Wedding in the Country, ca. 1860 Folded, commissioned, gouache-painted paper sheet, in the taste of the Gimbel brothers, of a panoramic composition showing a wedding in the country, in the spirit of the 18th century. The notary on the left receives the parents of the bride and groom, while the bride and groom begin to dance to the sound of a hurdy-gurdy player. On the right, a large crowd has come to celebrate the wedding. The reverse side is painted with a border of grapes resting on bamboo. Central cartel with musical instruments in a frame of golden vine leaves and scrolls of flowers and fruits. Rich white mother-of-pearl mount cut, carved, engraved, burgundy, gilded and enhanced in colors. Two couples of lovers among flowers and bunches of grapes dominate three labels. In the center, a couple in a garden. On the left a young man and his dog, facing a young woman on the right playing the flute. The painted plumes of characters in medallions underlined by faceted red stones. The decoration on the reverse side, with a red line. Wear, a broken strand and missing. H. t. 28,5 H. f. 13,5 cm The flowers, foliage and bunches of grapes reveal an identical design on the leaf as on the mother-of-pearl strands. This is probably a commissioned fan, whose design is reminiscent of the work of the brothers Georges and Charles Gimbel, from Strasbourg. They contributed to the revival of the French fan under the Second Empire as S. Blondel wrote in Histoire des éventails (...) : " it is to the fertility of their brush that the resurrection of the old fan is partly attributed (...). The fans of these two artists are rarely signed.
