Grey granite STATUTE depicting Durga, a lotus in her left hand, her head surmounted by a high headdress, her hair pulled back into a bun from which a few braids escape at the back, her face serene, her torso bare and adorned with jewels, her ears adorned with heavy earrings, the lower part of her body clad in a pleated dhoti The goddess is standing in a light tribangha on a columnar base. South India, probably Tamil Nadu, 14th-17th century. Missing the right arm and hand; heavy patina and wear, traces of fire (?). H. 59 cm (With base H. 69 cm) 6,000/8,000 In the Hindu pantheon, Durga is one of the epithets of Parvati, consort of Shiva. A family tradition, this beautiful statuette was acquired by the current owner's grandfather in the 1920s.
