Théodore LACAILLE (Paris 1823 - ?) - Lot 126
Théodore LACAILLE (Paris 1823 - ?) Strollers in the 18th Century near the Pont-Neuf and the Samaritan Pump Signed and dated lower right on the sign T. LA CAILLE / PARIS 1851. 71 x 97 cm The Pompe de la Samaritaine was built during the reign of Henri IV on the Pont-Neuf to supply water to the Louvre and the royal residences. The system of various fountains that had been in use until then in Paris had indeed reached its limits. Completed in 1608, the pump made it possible to operate the fountains of the Louvre and the Tuileries. It owes its name to the decoration of gilded bronze statues on the façade representing Christ and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. A carillon marked the hours. After numerous restorations in the 18th century, the pump was finally destroyed in 1813, to the great regret of the Parisians.
