Dauphiné] Set of 6 manuscript maps of the Dauphiné. 1/ - Map - Lot 353
Dauphiné] Set of 6 manuscript maps of the Dauphiné. 1/ - Map of the baillage [sic] and presidial of Grenoble (42,2 x 50,3 cm) ; 2/ - Map of the baillage [sic] of Gap (39,2 x 50,4 cm) ; 3/ - Parlement de Grenoble, généralité de Grenoble, carte du baillage [sic] du Buis (38 x 51.5 cm) ; 4/ - Carte des baillages [sic] de Briançon et d'Embrun (39.4 x 48.6 cm) ; 5/ - Carte du baillage [sic] de S. Marcellin (38.2 x 52.8 m); 6/ - Parlement de Grenoble, généralité de Grenoble, carte du baillage [sic] de Vienne (40.6 x 53.9). Maps on paper drawn with a pen and brown ink, rehashed with pink, yellow, green and grey washes, mounted under two light pink and bright pink mats separated by a gilded listel, the whole framed under glass with a moulded and gilded rod. All cards have a middle fold, the Grenoble card has two folds. Some discreet damp stains. This set presents the seven bailliages of the generality of Grenoble with the list of the parishes which compose them. The map of Grenoble is provided with a scalloped fall, presented unfolded. Although undated, these maps can be dated to the very end of the 17th century or the very beginning of the following century. The mountains, and particularly the Pelvoux massif, are represented in the form of small isolated mounds that are not very realistic, very different from what we will see in the second half of the 18th century on the Cassini map and closer to the way in which the engineer and cartographer Jean de Beins (1577-1651) represented the mountains of the Grésivaudan around 1650. On the other hand, the citadel of Mont-Dauphin, built by Vauban from 1693 is well mentioned but it is not materialized by a bastioned enclosure as are its neighbors of Embrun and Briançon. One will be able to usefully compare our maps with the Map of the General Government of Dauphiné by Tillemon, dated precisely of 1692 and which does not mention Mont-Dauphin and with the Map of the General Government of Dauphiné engraved by Frederick de Witt before his death in 1707 and which mentions and represents Mont-Dauphin with its walls. A notebook of 3 folios paginated 149 to 154, containing the description of the bailliages of the generality of Grenoble, with the financial estimation of their offices, and following the beginning of the government of Flanders. This notebook, in a different handwriting from the maps, can be dated to the mid-18th century.
