Iacovleff, Alexandre - Drawings and paintings of Asia. Execu - Lot 350
Iacovleff, Alexandre - Drawings and paintings of Asia. Executed during the Citroën Central Asia Expedition. Third mission G.-M. Haardt, L. Audouin-Dubreuil. Paris, edited by Lucien Vogel at Jules Meynial, s.d. [1934]. In-folio under a flap wallet closed with two black ribbons - 1 booklet of [18 ff.] sewn in the Chinese style (discharge of the rafia link on the title of the first plate) containing travel notes and sketches in black, and a suite of 50 plates in colour. Edition at 720 numbered copies, 1/700 copies printed on Madagascar-Lafuma for the travel notes and on Lafuma pure rag vellum for the hors-texte plates (n° 76). Planned to last six months, this expedition to Central Asia actually lasted almost a year. It crossed Persia, Afghanistan, undertook the ascent of the Himalayas, continued through the Gobi desert and Mongolia before arriving in Peking, the ultimate goal of the journey. Iacovleff, who in his youth had travelled in the Far East and brought back material for a book published by Vogel in 1922, Drawings & Paintings from the Far East, reached the full maturity of his art during this expedition. His ethnographic and documentary work is of the utmost importance, and his illustrations are of luminous beauty.
