Le Fèvre, Georges - Expedition Citroën Centre-Asia. The Yell - Lot 349
Le Fèvre, Georges - Expedition Citroën Centre-Asia. The Yellow Cruise. Third mission Georges-Marie Haardt, Louis Audouin-Dubreuil. Paris, Plon, 1933. In-4, paperback, filled cover, folder and case covered with yellow paper. Spine of the folder faded, spine lined - [4 ff.], XLI, 344 pp, (1)f., 123 photographs, 6 maps (including 2 on a folding leaf at the end of the volume, and one on a double page). First edition. Edition of 2350 numbered copies, 1/350 on Madagascar (n° 342). From Beirut to Peking or "the Silk Road" by car. The cruise took place from April 4, 1931 to February 12, 1932, with the support of the French and British governments and under the suspicious gaze of Beijing. The expedition was a real technical challenge, particularly in the high plateaus of the Himalayas, and there is a spectacular photograph of a tracked car on the narrow balcony of a rock face falling steeply into a river... The political unrest in the regions he travelled through, as well as the climatic conditions, made the expedition even more perilous. Haardt died in Hong Kong at the end of the expedition, which is why the historian Georges Lefèvre, who accompanied him, took on the task of writing this book. The photos and drawings made during the expedition remain a precious testimony, some monuments have now disappeared as the Buddhas of Bamiyan, others still challenge us as this photograph of a young Iranian woman accompanied by this legend "the chador will disappear gradually. A very nice uncut copy.
