Doucet, Jérôme - Pidoll, P. de - La Grande Douleur des sept - Lot 305
Doucet, Jérôme - Pidoll, P. de - La Grande Douleur des sept artistes. Paris, Lucien Gougy, 1923. In-4, bound in black half-chagrin with bands, spine with 4 nerves underlined by gilt filets, gilt head, first cover kept - [48 ff.], 8 full-page engravings, framings and ornaments enhanced with gold by P. de Pidoll. Text printed in black on a blue background, in a rich floral frame. Edition at 658 numbered copies, 1/500 on vellum (n° 595), enriched with an ex-dono from the author to the Prefect Juillard inscribed under the justification. The distant Orient inspired Jérôme Doucet (1865-1957) on several occasions. The refinement as well as the brutality of Chinese civilization particularly suited his generous and colorful imagination. A great bibliophile, he endeavoured to publish his texts in luxurious publications for which he chose his illustrators with care, such as the Luxembourg painter Paul de Pidoll (1882-1954), whose lush illustrations are in perfect harmony with the text.
