Inspired by the Egyptomania in vogue in France since the return from Egypt, Théophile Gautier's novel is based both on the scholarly works of his friend Ernest Feydeau (father of the most famous Georges), dedicatee of the work, but also on the scripture, the plot featuring Moses in the last part of the novel.
