[Restif de La Bretonne, Nicolas-Edme]. - Les Nuits de Paris - Lot 201
[Restif de La Bretonne, Nicolas-Edme]. - Les Nuits de Paris ou le spectateur nocturne. London, 1788-1789. 7 volumes in-12 bound in half calf with smooth spine, title-piece (red) and head-piece (green) - lacking the head-piece of T 2, 6 head-pieces faded, beginning of splitting at 4 joints, corners pierced, scattered wetness. Complete with the 16 engravings attributed to Binet illustrating these XIV nights. The XVth night published in 1790 and the extremely rare XVIth night published in 1794 are not present. All the engravings show Restif draped in a large black cloak (the first one as an owl, "le Hibou spectateur" was the first title Restif envisaged), a stealthy shadow roaming the streets of the capital on the lookout for adventures and eager to collect all the particularities of the city's night life, blinking during his forays into the theatres and brightly lit salons. Whoever wants to know about Paris by night at the end of the 18th century must read this book. The Year of the National Ladies; or the day-by-day history of a French woman, by the same author. Geneva and Paris, "chez les libraires indiqués à la tête de mon catalogue", then, Duchêne, Mérigot et Louis (from August). 12 vol. in-12 bound, without figures. Some foxing.
