Leïpsick, Büschel, 1780-1786. Three series for a total of 42 volumes in-12, half morocco with purplish corners, spines decorated with gilt fillets on the boards. Spines faded, some spotting and dampening, a few leaves doubled in margin, several engravings short in margin (on some the binder's knife has reached the engraving). 283 illustrations h.-t. mostly by Binet or his pupils. The print run was 3500 copies. (Binding of the end of the 19th century).

The writing of the Contemporaines did not follow a preconceived order because at the beginning Restif thought to write only about twenty short stories. The total is 272. The first series presents "mixed contemporaries" belonging to all classes of society. The second is devoted to "common women", i.e. "beautiful merchants".
