Fontenelle. - Works. New Edition, increased by several piece - Lot 170
Fontenelle. - Works. New Edition, increased by several pieces relating to the Author, put for the first time in order of subjects, and more correct than all the previous ones. Paris, Jean-François Bastiens, 1790-1792. 8 volumes in-8, bound in contemporary fawn shagreened calf, gilt Greek border on the boards, smooth spines decorated with gilt fleurons, red and green morocco title and giblets, filleted edges, speckled edges - Some headbands are damaged, upper jaw of the first volume cracked as well as the lower jaws of volumes 2 and 6, small lack of skin on the upper cover of volume 3, small wormholes on some of the jaws - x, 477 pp, portrait in frontispiece; [2 ff.], 463 pp. with folding plate; [2 ff.], 563 pp. (misquoted 593; ff. P4-P5 unbound); [2 ff.], 472 pp; [2 ff.], 456 pp; vij, 515 pp. (1 f. restored); [2 ff.], 550 pp.; [2 ff.], 449 pp, [1 p. table]. In a life of almost one hundred years (he was one month short), Fontenelle (1657-1757) had time to produce a profuse and extremely varied work: the famous Dialogues des Morts and Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes, are side by side with plays, poetry, numerous works for the Académie des Sciences and innumerable eulogies, including those of Czar Peter I, Newton and Madame de Lambert. A pleasant copy despite the reported defects.
