Rodin, Auguste - Autograph letter signed to [Judith Cladel?] - Lot 145
Rodin, Auguste - Autograph letter signed to [Judith Cladel?] November 20, 1913. 2 pp. in 8 on headed paper of 77, rue de Varenne. "I am very happy to send you this group of two women. I am happy when I have my models with you, it is as if they were in a museum [...] The bust that you find well off is stopped by Lady Sackville's departure and put off until later [...]" Judith Cladel, who is undoubtedly the addressee of this letter [in 1913, she is among the women of Rodin's entourage, the only unmarried one] was one of Rodin's strongest supporters and played a key role in the foundation of the Rodin Museum. As for Lady Sackville-West, it took the sculptor almost two years to complete her bust, which did not please her. According to her, it gave her the appearance of a "fat negro".
