Translated from the English. By M. Le Moine, Doctor-Regent of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Paris. Work enriched with Notes, with 18 figures. Paris, Hérissant Père, 1771-1773. 2 volumes in-8, bound in contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges. Upper spine of volume I damaged, head and corners rubbed, small wormholes - xij, [2 ff.], xxij, 616 pp. 18 folding plates; xij, xlviij, 801 pp. 1 folding plate. First edition of the translation of "An essay towards a complete new System of Midwifery, theoretical and practical" (1751). Burton is the first to suggest that puerperal fever is contagious, as well as being the first to discuss caesarean section in detail.

Joints cracked at the level of the headpieces, covers and corners a little rubbed, marginal wetness on part of the volume, some foxing - xiij, 715 pp.

Errors in the title but the copy is complete of the 5 parts : diseases of girls - diseases of pregnancy - diseases of women in childbirth - chronic diseases following childbirth - chronic diseases following the cessation of menstruation. The first volume, signed by the author and justified n° 51, is devoted to the effects of the syphilitic virus on the organs of generation in both sexes; the second to the effects of the syphilitic virus on the whole system of the animal economy. A chapter is devoted to the treatment of pregnant women and children.
