Pugin, Augustus. - Paris and its environs displayed in a ser - Lot 4
Pugin, Augustus. - Paris and its environs displayed in a series of picturesque views. The drawings made under the direction of Mr Pugin and engraved under the superintendence of Mr C. Heath. The topographical and historical description by L.T. Ventouillac. London, Jennings, 1829-1831. 2 volumes in 1 vol. in-4, half-bound bronze calf with corners, spine ornamented, marbled edges - spines split, title-piece lifted, leather gaps, corners pierced - 202 pp. (continuous pagination on both volumes), 2 engraved titles and 101 plates each comprising two steel-engraved views, the 101st (château de Rosny and Bains Vigier) is not announced in the table. Beautiful album showing the main monuments and views of romantic Paris before the great urban planning works of the middle of the century, before the construction of emblematic monuments such as the Arc de l'étoile and before the restoration of old monuments such as Notre-Dame. It offers a view of several monuments that have disappeared, such as Ledoux's octroi gates, the Hôtel Legendre on rue des Bourdonnais and the Ministry of Finance on rue de Rivoli. At the end of the book, some scenes of the 1830 revolution are represented. The director of the book, Augustus Pugin, is one of the most important English architects, promoter of the "gothic revival", to whom we owe, among other things, the reconstruction of the Parliament in London and the restoration of Windsor Castle. Nevertheless, the monuments shown in the album also bear witness to his admiration for classical and contemporary architecture. Bilingual text in English and French.
