VALLAURIS, Jules AGARD (1906-1986) - Lot 203
VALLAURIS, Jules AGARD (1906-1986) ZOOMORPHE SCULPTURE, "The kiss of the Pigeon & the Donkey", 1970s Terracotta decorated with engobes, heightened with black, on a pedestal. Handwritten signature engraved on the pedestal. H. 24 cm ; W 21.5 cm In 1921, Jules Agard was a turner at the Clergue family who ran the Jérôme Massier factory at the time, then he joined Madoura and became one of the turners who assisted Pablo Picasso. Soon "inhabited" by this ceramic with its ductile forms, he began to show personal works, often zoomorphic, from 1970 onwards and became very popular. These matt colours are inspired by the patinas that Picasso applied to some of his pieces. Bibliography: Picasso & la céramique, 2005, p. 179 & Anne Lajoix, L'Age d'Or de Vallauris, Editions de l'Amateur, 1995.
