MUMUYE STATUE, Nigeria - Lot 50
MUMUYE STATUE, Nigeria Medium-hard wood with brown patina, pigments, accidents. H. 98 cm Large effigy standing on indented and disjointed legs, the rounded pelvis supporting a stretched bust framed by bent arms. The long tubular neck is surmounted by a head flanked by large, pierced, disc-shaped ears. The face opens onto large circular eyes, with a network of incised hatching describing the hairstyle and integumentary ornaments. A very similar work was described in situ by Philippe Fry, author of an important essay on Mumuye art in the 1960s, as the work of the sculptor Nyavo of Pantisawa (fig. 8.18 Central Nigeria unmasked ). This work is itself related to the Mumuye in the Musée du Quai Branly (inventory no. 71.69.22.1) (fig. 8.17 ibid). The formal similarity with an identified hand and the intrinsic qualities of the work make it a precious testimony of the genre. BIBLIOGRAPHY : Central Nigeria unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley, Fowler Museum at UCLA, Fowler Museum of Cultural history editions, Los Angeles, 2011, fig. 8.17, p. 249, and fig. 8.18 p. 250.
