(bronze print n°5/10, Valsuani cast). - Robert Wlérick (1882-1944), Paris, Musée Rodin, 31 March-28 June 1982; Mont-de-Marsan, Musée Despiau-Wlérick, 17 July-26 September 1982, Éditions Musée Rodin, 1982, n°45, p. 52, repr. (bronze print no. 7/10, cast by Claude Valsuani). Thérèse was a young woman from Normandy who was hired by the Wlérick family as a housekeeper in 1927. In 1928, Wlérick took her as a model to create Thérèse accroupie, Thérèse à la chemise, Calme hellénique, La Toilette and Méditation. He worked with her in different poses and styles: Meditation is opposed to the geometric rigour of Calme hellénique. With the same model, Wlérick achieved a completely different effect (1982, cat. exp., p.49). The Bust of Therese is from Meditation. This large figure was enlarged to life size and modified in 1930-1931. Wlérick regularly used layering to give independent life to parts of a complete model. He did this with La Jeunesse (1927) from which he extracted the head and then the torso, or with L'Offrande (1932) from which he made Portrait de Gaby (ca. 1933). This Bust of Thérèse was cast in bronze in ten copies and two artist's proofs. The 6/10 is kept at the Dax town hall; this proof was exhibited in 1982 during the major retrospective of the sculptor organised at the Rodin Museum in Paris and the Despiau-Wlérick Museum in Mont-de-Marsan.
